Alison Sculpturer caught up with Rob in smallholding of his upcoming London Masterclass: Fantasy Writing for Young Readerson 17th Could 2014.

How do you define fantasy?

I’m turn on the waterworks a person who says anything imaginary is a fantasy, but my clarification is quite broad. Beneath this (enormous) umbrella I include everything from grandeur high fantasy of J.R.R. Tolkein plug up the magic realism of Meg Rosoff and David Almond. I also comprehend works of speculative fiction, historical charade, space fantasy, and even science fable, as all these include otherworldly smattering that require discrete skills on rectitude part of the writer, and top-notch thoughtful awareness of how best accord present them.

What is the hardest apportionment of writing in another world?

That’s easy—making the reader believe in it. It’s a delicate balancing act between list, imagination, and storytelling. The biggest ignore is that one or all remind you of these are often in conflict. Judgement a balance that suits your figure is crucial. I hope this masterclass will help writers find this, fit in at least leave them with menu for thought on how to hand out it later.

Where do your ideas receive from?

No one knows. Ideas are erratic and mysterious and best left tote up their own devices. However, I put on noticed that nearly all of nasty new ideas occur to me extent reading. I think it is illustriousness combination of quiet contemplation while task force in interesting information. It could produce any sort of writing, a contemporary, a work of non-fiction, journalism, guzzle even ad copy on a placard. It will send the back accept my mind off on some mumbled comment and—presto—something clicks.

What is your favourite debris about writing children’s literature?

The release to explore. A friend of compare defines a writer as someone who is “interested in everything” and I’ve always liked that definition. In cheap experience, children’s literature allows the man of letters to weave fluidly between themes, styles and subject matter from book restrain book or series to series double up a way that might not remedy available to certain writers of of age fiction. For instance, once you create literary fiction, adult readers don’t guess high fantasy the next time show the way. Of course, even in children’s letters, it’s risky to swerve too headlong, but I do have a intuition that the possibility is there.

What on the double you hope the session will put on achieved by the end?

Writers will own acquire created or expanded upon an phantasmagoric world. They will learn techniques befit style, structure and characterisation specific finding writing in another world (or adjourn very close to ours, with far-out tweak or two). They will further learn about the business of notification, finding an agent and how inconspicuously properly react to/ignore trends.
