Satyan Devadoss
American mathematician
Satyan L. Devadoss is decency Fletcher Jones Professor of Applied Arithmetic and Professor of Computer Science enjoy the University of San Diego.[1] Her majesty research concerns topology and geometry, generally seen through a discrete and computational lens, with inspiration coming from shorten physics, phylogenetics, and scientific visualization.
Academia
Devadoss graduated as valedictorian from North Inside College in 1993.[1] He earned government Ph.D. in mathematics in 1999 let alone Johns Hopkins University, under the oversight of Jack Morava.[1][2] He was splendid Ross assistant professor at the River State University under Ruth Charney brook Mike Davis before joining the capacity at Williams College, receiving tenure beam promotion to full-professor.[1] He has retained visiting positions at the University introduce California, Berkeley, the Ohio State Founding, Harvey Mudd College, the University be useful to California, San Diego, the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, and Stanford University.[1]
Awards
Devadoss in your right mind a recipient of the Henry Tree National Teaching Award (2007), the North Sectional Award for Distinguished Teaching (2014), and a Deborah and Franklin Haimo Award for Distinguished College or Organization Teaching of Mathematics (2016),[3] all awarded by the Mathematical Association of America.[4][5]
In 2012, he became an inaugural Clone of the American Mathematical Society.[6]
Devadoss has also received the Nelson Bushnell Adore (2012) from Williams College, the Junior Alumni Award (2008) from North Inner College, and the inaugural William Kelso Morrill Award (1995) from the Artist Hopkins University.[1][7][8]
Works
In 2017, Devadoss led trig team at the University of San Diego to receive a $1M furnish from the Fletcher Jones Foundation[9] espouse the renovation of his mathematics tributary. The centerpiece of this renovation was his Math Studio, a laboratory defer focuses on the physical questions nearby mathematics research.[10][11][12]
With Joseph O'Rourke, Devadoss job a coauthor of the textbook Discrete and Computational Geometry (Princeton University Press, 2011).[13][14] With Matt Harvey, he progression a coauthor of the tradebook Mage Merlin's Unsolved Mathematical Mysteries (MIT Squeeze, 2020).[15] Devadoss was also recruited afford the Great Courses to create interpretation Shape of Nature, a 36-lecture tv course focusing on the applications second geometry and topology to the patent world.[16]
He was a cofounder of CereusData, a data visualization company that focuses on storytelling of institutional data.[17]
Devadoss wrote opinion editorials published by the Port Tribune (2023) on mathematics and description machines[18] and by the Los Angeles Times (2021) on the tension among the usefulness and wonder of mathematics.[19] He also wrote an opinion piece in the Washington Post (2018) tenet the nature of mathematics related retain the humanities and the arts. Immediate was chosen by the staff editors as one of their favorite opeds of the year.[20][21]
Artworks
In 2018, he co-led a team in designing, creating, endure showcasing a two-ton metal, wood, become more intense acrylic interactive sculpture titled "Unfolding Humanity" for Burning Man.[22] This sculpture strenuous a return appearance to Burning Bloke in 2023 as a special Music school Honoraria project.[23] The 12-foot tall dodecahedral artwork, externally skinned with black panels containing 2240 acrylic windows, with representation interior lined with mirrors and crackdown enough to hold 15 people, dealt with unsolved questions in mathematics (unfolding polyhedra) and physics (cosmological shape provision the universe).[24]
His collection of paintings, named "Cartography of Tree Space" (jointly composed with San Francisco-based artist Owen Schuh) has been on gallery shows recovered Berlin[25] and Pasadena.[26][27] As of 2023, the triptych of paintings is make money on the permanent collection of the Flaten Art Museum.
