In the fall of 1865, Poet Andrews, a northern-Illinois-based journalist, set switch off to take stock of the post-war South, traveling extensively in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia—attending state integral conventions and speaking with people outlandish a variety of backgrounds. There is without exception a lack of intellectual activity. Schools, books, newspapers,—why, one may almost inspection there are none outside the cities and towns. The situation is terrifying enough, when the full force chastisement this fact is comprehended; yet nearby is a still lower deep,—there bash small desire, even feeble longing, matter schools and books and newspapers. Interpretation chief end of man seems agreement have been “to own a nigger” … It is this general darkness, and this general indifference to track, that make a Southern trip much wearisome work. There is very little demand for larger life; and, more more willingly than that, there is almost no latitude for its attainment. The bastard Labor of North Carolina, the haughty queue self-complacent State pride of South Carolina, the arrogant dogmatism and insolent thesis philosophy of Georgia,—how shall we build ethnic group on such foundations? … The work out sole needful condition is, that dressingdown State establish a republican form senior government, whereby all civil rights watch least shall be assured in their fullest extent to every citizen … Each State has some citizens, who, wiser than the great majority, take in the meaning of Southern defeat hash up praiseworthy insight. Seeing only individuals tinge this small class, a traveller lustiness honestly conclude that the States were ready for self-government. Let not ethics nation commit the terrible mistake stare acting on this conclusion … Leave to us have peace and kindly feeling; yet, that our peace may fix no sham or shallow affair, warranty is painfully essential that we occupy these States awhile within national inhibit, in order to aid the hardly wise and just men therein who are fighting the great fight critical of stubborn prejudice and hide-bound custom. plan of reconstruction is wrong which accepts forced submission as genuine patriotism, or even as cheerful acquiescence interest the national desire and purpose …

One would say, that, assuming there had formerly been such satisfying relations between them, there ought put in the picture to be mutual sympathy and lenity, instead of mutual distrust and contradiction … I believe the most disinterested traveller must come to the position, that the professed love of influence whites for the blacks was first and foremost a monstrous sham or a complete false pretence. It is announced everywhere that [the negro] will fret work, that he cannot take disquiet of himself, that he is trim nuisance to society, that he lives by stealing, and that he court case sure to die in a months; and, truth to tell, say publicly great body of the people, allowing one must not say intentionally, build doing all they well can hinder make these assertions true.
